John bought 316 acres in the area of Starnes Cove and westward.
He built a large log home there about 1815.
This was still standing in 1946.
John and Mary Smith Hawkins had eight children.
Dan, born 1818, married a Miss Rogers from Georgia and moved to West Asheville.
Albert, born 1820, married Nancy Evaline Jones, daughter of Wiley Jones.
James and Benjamin died in youth.
George married Caroline Luther.
Mary Jane married first Dillard Franklin Gudger and had Dillard F. and a daughter who married William Jones and moved to Georgia.
When widowed, Mary Jane married Capt. Augustus B. (Buck) Thrash and had Martha, Jennie, Hattie, Lou and Creo, and sons R. Lee and Augustus Pinkney.
Sarah Hawkins married Wiley Bryson of Mills River. Their children were: James, Robert, John, George, Wiley Ham (probably Hamilton) and Martha. Martha Hawkins' marriage is unknown.

When John died intestate, early 1857, his estate was of a size that Albert, the appointed executor, was required to post a $20,000. bond a sizeable sum for 1857.
John's personal property was sold at auction with the proceeds, like his real estate, divided among his heirs.
A good bit of the land was subsequently bought up by Albert.
In 1860 William L. Henry acquired a portion including the old log house.
