Married Emily A. Holton in Erwin SD on June 17, 1951. She predeceased him on June 1, 2010.
Graduated from Waitsfield High School in 1947. He later attended Mount Hermon, a prep school in Mount Hermon MA for nearly two years until his older brother, David, was killed in WWII. He later continued his education at Yankton College, Yankton SD and graduated in 1956.
Veteran - U.S. Air Force included one year of duty in the Korean Conflict
He began his teaching career at Yankton High School in 1956 and received his Master of Arts degree from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion SD in 1959. He later received his doctorate at Michigan State University in 1980
He helped author several books concerning the teaching of the Humanities in High School and Colleges.
A member of the faculty of Worthington Community College from 1960 to 1991. Served on several state and national Humanity Commissions. He also had a summer career teaching in summer camps in Maine.
He grew up in Waitsfield but lived in many communities through his lifetime and professional career
Retired June 1991 and moved to Waitsfield VT, his hometown.
During his retirement he wrote and published a second volume of the History of the Town of Waitsfield 1789 – 2000 (published in 2006)
Survived by five children, eleven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
