PINEDALE - Pinedale resident Bartley Skinner, 83, died May 21, 2004, in Pinedale, after a short but gallant fight with cancer.

A celebration of his life will be held in early summer at his favorite place, Fort William, near Pinedale.

Born July 26, 1920, in Kuttawa, Ky., he was the son of Bartley Sr. and Lora Lee (Moore) Skinner; and was baptized in the Presbyterian Church. The family returned to their home in Gilbert, Ariz.; and, later, moved to Phoenix, where he attended Kennilworth Elementary and Phoenix Union High schools and Phoenix College.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Force from August 1942 through November 1945.
On June 1, 1946, he married Rose Penton in Las Vegas.

They owned and operated Southwest Tile Contractors for several years in Phoenix; and he enjoyed part-time work as a stagehand for symphony, theater and movie productions as a member of IATSE Stage Employees Local No. 336.

In the late 1960s, the family moved to Pinedale and he and his wife designed, built and operated Fort William steak house and bed-and-breakfast inn, on Fall Creek. They sold Fort William in 1988 and moved into Pinedale, where they enjoyed retirement, including volunteer and civic duties. His wife is mayor of Pinedale.

He loved Western and family history; gardening, trees, plants and flowers; all animals, pets, and wildlife; and socializing with friends in Pinedale.

Survivors include his loving wife of 58 years of Pinedale; son, William Bartley "Bill" Skinner, and his wife of LaBarge; two granddaughters; a special nephew; and other devoted nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Lora Lee Skinner Cornell.

Memorials may be made to the Museum of the Mountain Man, P.O. Box 909, Pinedale, WY 82941; or Kickin' Cancer in Sublette County, P.O. Box 383, Daniel, WY 83115.
