Mrs. Leedy Enters Into Rest
St. Joseph Record September 2, 1949 page 1
Closing a long, useful and eventful life of 94 years, Mrs. Melvina Leedy passed away at 10:30 p.m. Monday in the Dunn nursing home in Champaign, where because of her infirmities she had been living for the past three years.
Mrs. Leedy was born October 6, 1855, a daughter of Joseph and Mary Peters, on a farm southwest of St. Joseph, and had passed her entire life in this vicinity. She was married to James Albert Leedy in 1882, to whom she was a capable and loving helpmate until hi death in 1912. Besides other community interests they were engaged in merchandising here for a long period of little and after Mr. Leedy's passing, his wife owned and managed the business until the work became too arduous for her waning strength and retired from business after more than fifty years.
She was deeply religious and devoted to her church, which she supported consistently by her prayers, her deeds and her finances as long as the membership remained sufficient for the maintenance of the building. The ministers were at home with Aunt Mel and her loyalty was noteworthy.
Her kindly ministrations and deeds of helpfulness will never be forgotten by the scores of friends and neighbors to whom she gave cheer and aid as long as her strength permitted. Remembrances from near and far were showered upon her on her birthdays and she had an abiding pleasure in her friendships.
Confined to her bed by a fractured hip about four years ago, she was a patient sufferer, and her quiet peaceful passing justified her faith in her God and her fellowmen. She was greatly loved and will be sincerely mourned.
"Blessed are the dead which died in the Lord . . . yeas, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors; and their works do follow them."
With her parents and husband, three sisters, Mrs. Mary Strong, Mrs. Lida Dunseth and Mrs. Lucy Stanner preceded her in death. She is survived by three nephews, Ray and Guy Stanner, both of Champaign, and Joseph Stanner, both of Howe, Ind., and two nieces, Mrs. Frank Denhart of St. Joseph, and Miss Pearle Stanner of Champaign, with a number of grandnieces and nephews. One nephew, Rollie Stanner, is also deceased.
Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 from the Freese funeral home.
A. J. McLaughlin of Champaign, a former pastor, will officiate, with Charles Chumbley assisting. The body will be interred in Patterson cemetery in the family lot.
