| Birth: | Oct. 20, 1913 | | Death: | Feb. 19, 1998 |  Musician, Comedian. Born in Niagra, Kentucky, he was a country music comedian banjo player, fondly known as Grandpa Jones. He began performing old-time banjo and singing in the 1920s, receiving national attention on radio by the 1930s, with recorded hits such as "Rattler" and "Mountain Dew". He joined the Grand Ole Opry as a member in 1946 and remained there throughout his career. He signed with Decca Records in 1956, recording a total of 16 songs including the country hits "The All-American Boy" and "T for Texas". In 1969, he gained unprecedented national exposure when he became a permanent member of the cast on the TV series "Hee Haw" for the next two decades. He was inducted into Country Music Hall of Fame in 1978 and continued recording into the 1980s. He died at age 84 in Nashville, Tennessee. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)

You were so talented and such a joy to see and hear you play the banjo and sing. I have childhood memories of listening to the Grand Old Opry on Radio on Saturday nights and listening to you and all the other greats! Who's gonna fill their shoes? -
