Robert Phelps Anderson, 81, Julian Road, died at 11:30 p.m. Monday, July 16, 2007, at Jennie Stuart Medical Center of natural causes.

Graveside services were this morning at Riverside Cemetery with the Rev. John M. Thomas officiating. Hughart and Beard Funeral Home, Hopkinsville, was in charge of arrangements.

A native of Christian County, he was born July 14, 1926, the son of the late William Bowers Anderson Jr. and Ella Phelps Anderson.

In 1982 he retired as deputy director, Fort Campbell directorate of engineering and housing following a career that spanned three decades with the Corps of Engineers.

A Vanderbilt University graduate with a degree in civil engineering, his career started in Louisville as a construction engineer for the Corps of Engineers. He later transferred to the Department of the Army as planning engineer at Fort Campbell, and in 1961 advanced to directorate of engineering and in 1972 was promoted to the post of deputy director of engineering and housing.

He was a member of the Association of the United States Army and had served as president, vice president and secretary and treasurer of the Fort Campbell Society of American Military Engineers.

He had also served as president of the Hopkinsville Golf and Country Club.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Altsheler Anderson; two sons, Joseph A. Anderson, Robert P. Anderson Jr.; a daughter, Ellen Anderson; a brother, William Bowers “Billy” Anderson, all of Hopkinsville, one grandchild and one great-grandchild.
