[Click on photos on right to see larger size versions.] This is my great grandfather on my mother's side. According to my mother, he was from the S.E. part of England, and his mother was a member of the Belbin family. He moved to Scotland, and then to Ireland "because of the troubles." Mother said he was very good-natured, and used to play parlour games. My mother & the other children thought he was funny, and laugh at him, but he was very good natured about it. My sister sent me an email that states that John H. Cann married Annie E. Girvin at the 12th. Presbyterian Church in Baltimore, MD on November 23rd., 1880. This explains the connection of the Canns with the Girvins, since the right side of the monument has three members of the Girvin family, who I will try & add to "FindAGrave" before too long. The couple had at least three children that I know of: Samuel Edwin Cann (my grandfather), Harry Pennington Cann, and Emily M. Cann. (Samuel and Harry are interred in Druid Ridge Cemetery.) My understanding is that John H. supported the family with a newspaper route delivering papers, a job that's done by paper boys today, but was an adult occupation back in the latter half of the 19th. century. The John H. Cann family lived, according to the 1890 and 1899 Baltimore City Directories, at 1222 Eden St., just a few blocks from Greenmount Cemetery. The 1890 Directory lists his occupation as a "Sun carrier. "In the 1912 and 1913 Baltimore City Directories, he is listed at 1226 N. Eden St. It appears that these houses are still standing (as of 7/14/2006) - if you go to http://local.live.com, and type in the addresses, and switch to "bird's eye view," you can see them "from the air" yourself. I will add more later if I do in fact acquire additional information.
