| Birth: | Nov. 30, 1699 | | Death: | Aug. 6, 1746 | King of Denmark and Norway. His parents were king Frederik IV and queen Louise von Mecklenburg-Güstrow. As crownprince, Christian VI was expected to marry Anna of Russia, the daughter of zar Peter the Great. She was turned down by the Danish court, that did not find her distinguished enough. The king had an unfavorable apperence, and was an awkward, reserved and diffident appearance, and he introduced a very formal, pietistic and solitary lifestyle at his court. Public entertainments were banned from his kingdoms, and it was his command, that his subjects should attend church-services every sunday. The slender king lived secludes from his peoplein a luxurious, sublime splendour in order to glorify his absolute royal power. He built new splendid palaces: Christiansborg Palace, Hirschholm Palace and the tiny huntinglodge, the Hermitage. He shared his desire for luxury with the queen, Sophie Magdalene von Brandenburg-Kulmbach. She was raised in one of poorest princely houses in Germany. As king he was both diligent and conscientious.
