Raymond Floyd Sanders
Birth: Dec. 4, 1916
Death: Oct. 28, 1983

Major League Baseball Player. He was considered to be such a sure thing as a minor leaguer that the Cardinals decided that he would be the replacement for future Hall Of Famer Johnny Mize at first base. Mize was traded to the Giants in 1941. The sure-handed Sanders played first base for Cardinal pennant winners in 1942, 1943, and 1944. Although not the power threat that Mize was, he still nonetheless reached career highs of 12 Home Runs, 102 RBIs, and a .295 batting average in 1944 while leading National League first basemen in fielding. The Cards decided to move Sanders to the Boston Braves in 1946 so Stan Musial could shift to first base. During the 1946 season he was involved in a collision with teammate Erv Dusak, the resulting injury being a fractured arm, He was never the same again. He sat out the 1947 season and was traded by the Braves along with Bama Rowell and $40000 cash to the Brooklyn Dodgers for Eddie Stanky on March 6, 1948. He was then purchased back by the Braves on April 18, 1948. He did appeared in 1 at bat for the Braves during the 1948 World Series. After his retirement, he scouted briefly for the Indians. Over the course of his career, he accrued a .274 lifetime average with 42 Home Runs and 329 RBI's in 630 league games. (bio by: Frank Russo)
