Elias was a farmer. He married Mary Kelso on February 2, 1837 in Highland County, Ohio. They had ten children; five sons and five daughters. Obituary Notice: Lane County Gazette; Dighton (Lane County), Kansas. Article dated, June 9th, 1881. Excerpt from article; " . . . Elias Carey, age 64, died Saturday, June 4, and buried Sunday in the cemetery one mile west of this place. He was born in West Virginia {at time of Elias' birth West Virginia was still Virginia.} in 1816 and moved to Ohio at an early age. He moved to Missouri in 1866, to Iowa in 1872 and to Kansas in 1879. With three sons he lived in Lane County little more than a year. He had ten children, nine still living, and 37 grandchildren. A widow also survives. Mr. Carey contracted lung disease about 12 years ago and gradually lost his health, since that time. He was born of Quaker parents and has always been of that faith. . . ."
