Musician. Guitarist and founding member of the soft-rock music ensemble Orleans. Born into a musically-inclined family, his mother was a nightclub singer, she would often bring Larry along to watch her performances. From these experiences, a passion for music was born and he became acquainted with a variety of instruments including the bass, keyboards and trumpet, in addition to the guitar. Following two years of studying Musical Education at Ithaca College, he formed his own group called Boffalongo and landed a recording contract with the United Artist label. In the two years of their existence before disbanding in 1971, they yielded two albums and became known for recording the song "Dancin' in the Moonlight" which became a Top-20 hit for King Harvest in 1973. Drummer Wells Kelly (a former band-mate of Hoppen's in Boffalongo) along with guitarist Jon Hall were in the process of forming a new ensemble. Hoppen was contacted to join them in Woodstock, New York and the group Orleans was born in early 1972. The secured a contract with the Asylum label and yielded their best known singles "Dance With Me" (1975) and "Still the One" (1976) which were both Top-10 hits in addition to gold records. In 1977, Hoppen departed and went onto record with a wide range of artists including Jackson Browne, Ricky Skaggs and John Sebastian. He later returned to Orleans and participate in tours with a lineup which included his younger brother Lance. He additionally recorded as a solo artist. (bio by: C.S.)
