Born at Sorgenfri Castle as the eldest son of King Christian X and Queen Alexandrine of Denmark. As crownprince he became regent upon his fathers riding accident in 1942 during the German occupation of Denmark in WW2. He became known as the "sailor king" as he was very attatched to the Royal Danish Navy. 1935 married to princess Ingrid of Sweden, with whom he had 3 daughters. In 1953 the constitution was changed so that the throne could be inherited in the female line of succession, and upon his death in 1972 he was succeded by his eldest daughter Margrethe II.
