John F. Wessel
Again, one of the old settlers and pioneers of Campbell County has answered the call of the great beyond. John Wessel, Sr., respected and held in highest esteem by his fellowmen has passed on.
John Wessel was born in Gross Mainsdorf, Prussia, Germany, March 30, 1851. He was the eldest son of Michael Wessel and Elizabeth Uhl.
At the age of 12 he immigrated with his parents to Kiew, Russia. Here he met and entered holy wedlock with Wilhelmina Schmidt, June 06, 1876. With her, he enjoyed a life of married bliss and happiness for 48 years until his faithful spouse was taken from his side shortly before Christmas 1924.
This union was blessed with nine children, of whom four preceded their father in death, a daughter, Wilhelmina who died in the old country, Mrs. Ed Werner, Mrs. Henry Werner, and Emma. Those who are left to mourn the passing of a kind and devoted father are: John F. and August Wessel, Mrs. August Kluckman, Mrs. John Hinzman, and Mrs. Ervin Rische; also 18 grandchildren and a brother in Hazelton, North Dakota; and two sisters who live in Germany.
In June 1893, the departed one came to America and settled immediately on the farm which since has been his home.
The deceased had always enjoyed good health and was quite vigorous in spite of his advanced age. However, he started to grow weaker about two months ago, and from that time on it was evident to the family and friends that associated with him, that his days were numbered.
He passed away last Wednesday night, August 10, 1927, and attained the age of 76 years, five months and 11 days.
Funeral services were conducted at his home and at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, of which he was one of the founders and organizers, last Friday afternoon. Reverend Blauert officiating.
"May he rest in peace."
