Earl was living in Wahpeton, ND when he entered the service and was a member of the Air/Navy Gunfire Liaison Company, 1st Signal Battalion, 1st Marine Division.

On June 8, 1951, he was killed when his jeep hit a land mine.

Private First Class Mollerud was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
