Nina Belle Horton Avery was the daughter of one of eight children of Albert Horton and Susan Narcissus Smith, the wife of Robert lee Avery whom she married on 29 Apr 1925 in Richmond, VA. They had no children

Nina Belle was a Valedictorian of Farmville High School and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, NC in 1917. She taught French and English for three years at a high school in Salisbury, NC. In 1920 she moved to Richmond, Va and she completed a business course at Massey Business College. Then she began a long and successful career with Chesapeake and Ohio Railway Company, eventually becoming supervisor of contracts for the division of government relations. She graduated from The Virginia School of Law in Richmond in 1953 and was admitted to the bar four years later.
