Birth: Sep. 26, 1761
Prince Edward County
Virginia, USA
Death: Feb. 1, 1814
Halifax County
Virginia, USA

Son of Thomas Scott (born March 21, 1727 in Gloucester Co., Virgina) & Catherine Tompkins (born 1733 in Virginia)

John attended Hampden-Sydney College. He entered William & Mary College after the Revolution and graduated in the Law Department.

Some family info is from notes made by Christopher C. Scott, (1807-1857)

John's 1st wife was Elizabeth Ann Coleman-sister of Henry Embry Coleman of Woodlawn Plantation. (Elizabeth & her brother, Henry, were children of John & Mary (Embry) Coleman)

John married Martha "Patsy" Thompson Sept 29, 1785.

John's plantation, 2000 acres, stretched from the Village of Scottsburg all the way back to Difficult Creek, some three miles northwest of Scottsburg. There John practiced law and farmed. He was well known in the criminal department of the law profession and often received large fees. He established saw mills, & grist mills on Difficult Creek and was planning a cotton mill when he died at age 53. The Village of Scottsburg, VA in Halifax County was named for Scott.

For children of John & Martha-see Martha's memorial-click on link below.

John & Martha are buried in the cemetery near the site where their home once stood. The cemetery is enclosed by a fieldstone rock wall.

John & Martha's headstone was paid for by John's great great granddaughter, Mrs. (Daisy) David Haines Ball. The headstone was set by the local Berryman Green Chapter National Society of the DAR. The President, at that time, of Hampden-Sydney College gave an address at the ceremony when the headstone was placed.
