Some family info is from notes made by Christopher C. Scott, (1807-1859)

John's 1st wife was Elizabeth Ann Coleman-sister of Henry Embry Coleman of Woodlawn Plantation. (Elizabeth & her brother, Henry, were children of John & Mary (Embry) Coleman)John and Elizabeth married October 22,1782 and
Elizabeth died March 23, 1783.

John married Martha "Patsy" Thompson Sept 29, 1785.

John's plantation, 2000 acres, stretched from the Village of Scottsburg all the way back to Difficult Creek, some three miles northwest of Scottsburg. There John practiced law and farmed. He was well known in the criminal department of the law profession and often received large fees. He established saw mills, & grist mills on Difficult Creek and was planning a cotton mill when he died at age 52. The Village of Scottsburg, VA in Halifax County was named for Scott.

John & Martha are buried in the cemetery near the site where their home once stood. The cemetery is enclosed by a fieldstone rock wall.

John & Martha's headstone was paid for by John's great great granddaughter, Mrs. (Daisy) David Haines Ball. The headstone was set by the local Berryman Green Chapter National Society of the DAR. The President, at that time, of Hampden-Sydney College gave an address at the ceremony when the headstone was placed.
