Merrill J. Flitsch, 89, of 335 Daws Rd., Hiawatha, passed away Wednesday, April 11, 2007, in Banner Gardens Hospice House, Mesa, Ariz., following a sudden illness.
Merrill was born in rural Linn County, near Alburnett, on July 27, 1917, the son of Jacob H. and Lera Lyon Flitsch. He graduated from Alburnett High School and attended ISU at Ames. On July 20, 1942, he married Marjorie Louise McGowan in Alburnett.
While living in Cedar Rapids, Merrill was employed by Colonial Bakery and John Hancock Insurance Co. He then farmed near Troy Mills and then Walker. Merrill retired from the farm in 1977, moved to Hiawatha and worked at Tractor Supply Co. in Cedar Rapids.
He was a member of the Iowa Farm Bureau and was a 4-H leader at Troy Mills. He was a member and past president of the Walker Lions Club, a member of ABC, the Iowa Black Angus Association and Walker Methodist Church. He bowled at Walker Lanes.
