Elizabeth went by her middle name, MARIA. While visiting at the home of Rev. Joel Sanford, she met another guest, Amos Reed who was Joel's nephew. Amos was quite taken with her and wrote her a letter on Mar. 7th, 1855, she kept this letter all her life.

She married Amos Reed on Oct. 25th, 1855 in Peoria Co. IL. To this union 13 children were born, Simon Rice, Mary Florence, Emergine, John Amos, Clara M., Oscar, Rosa Bell, Emeline, Elizabeth Jane, George Morris, (twins) Katie and Luella, and Abigail May Reed.

The family left IL, moved to Iowa, then in 1870 moved to Kansas by covered wagon. Amos later bought a farm in Republic Co. near Haddom and built a two story house in 1875. Their last three children were born here. Later years the farm was sold to their son-inlaw Gilbert Irvin Tiff and daughter, Abigail. The Tiff's then lived in this house and their 5 children were born there.
