Hattie (Hiske) R. Poortinga was born 13 March 1885 in Driesum, Friesland, The Netherlands. the eldest daughter and 4th child of Rieuwerts (Robert) Iebe Poortinga and Swopkje (Sarah) Bienses Bierma. As a younger woman, most of her nieces and nephews remember her as a "hard-working soul". She, and her Brother, Nicholas, shared a home with their parents until the late 1920s. Somwtime after Robert's death in 1931, Hattie and Nick purchased a home in the town of Pella. Their Mother, Sarah, lived with them, but did little in the way of work. Sarah had protested the family coming to America, and refused to wear dresses that were made of any material other than black or dark grey. All of her dresses were hand-made by Hattie. It was said that Hattie "waited on Grandma hand-and-foot for the remaining 20 years that Sarah lived with them. "Grandma" could laways be found in her rocking chair on the front porch. Hattie died at the age of 90 in the town of Pella, outliving her Brother, Nick, by nearly 4 years. They are both buried at Silent City Cemetery in the town of Monroe, where they share a plot and monument.
