Champion Racehorse. Born in England, he was given the Arabic name meaning "Light". He competed in a few races but only had moderate success. He was sold to Charles Howard who brought him to America and his trainer, Burley Parke, trained him to become a better racehorse. Under his guidance, the horse was able to accomplish such feats as winning four out of five races against legendary racehorse Citation. He also defeated legendary racehorse Assault twice, making him the first horse to ever defeat two United States Triple Crown champions. His major wins include the Bretby Nursery Handicap, Diomed Stakes, Great Foal Stakes, Santa Anita Handicap, San Juan Capistrano Handicap, American Handicap, Golden Gate Handicap and the Hollywood Gold Cup. He won the United States Champion Handicap Male Horse award and was posthumously inducted into the United States Racing Hall of Fame. He passed away at the age of twenty-nine and was buried in an unmarked grave on the grounds of the Loma Rica Ranch in Grass Valley, California. He, as well as his accomplishments, were all but forgotten until decades later when reports surfaced that a mall was going to be built on the land that once belonged to the ranch. Charlotte Farmer began a petition to find his grave and move him to another spot. After four years of raising money for the project, she along with the help of two archeologists, found the grave in March 2010. The remains were exhumed and taken to Georgetown, Kentucky where, on August 31, 2011, they were laid to rest in the Old Friends Dream Chase Farm cemetery. (bio by: Whispers From The Grave)
