Bob Green was an enslaved African American. He was a young boy when William Giles Harding brought him to the Belle Meade Plantation to work. He grew up working with horses & was "an expert in everything related to the Thoroughbred".

Even after the Civil War he chose to stay on at the plantation & was one of the highest paid workers. Towards the end of his life he was heartbroken because he was finally forced to leave. He requested to be buried on the plantation grounds & his request was granted.

He stated that upon William Harding's marriage to his first wife, Mary Selena McNairy, Bob and his mother came to Belle Meade Plantation.
