Emma J. Whitney, 81, of Towanda RR 4, Monroe Twp., formerly of Wysox, Pa., passed away early Tuesday morning, Aug. 4, 2009, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law Cathy and Gordon Gowin, with whom she resided.
Emma was born Sept. 29, 1927, in Forty Fort, Pa., the daughter of the late Silas Galloway and Viola Harring Galloway. She was employed by GTE Sylvania in Towanda for 24 years until her retirement in 1987. Emma's life surrounded her family and she especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She enjoyed the outdoors, gardening and working among her flowers.
Emma was a member of the Wyalusing Methodist Church and the Sylvania Women's Club.
She is survived by: her children, Harry Mader and his wife Jeanni Mader of Stevensville, Pa., Carl Mader and his wife Bonnie Mader of Wyalusing RR 1, Pa., Donna Brown and her husband Jim Brown of Towanda RR 6, Pa., and Cathy Gowin and her husband Gordon Gowin of Towanda RR 4, Pa.; nine grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; brothers Edgar Galloway of Reading, Pa., and Harry Galloway and his wife Phyllis Galloway of Baker, Ore.; a sister, Neva Pond of Reading, Pa.; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by: her husband, Max Whitney, on March 25, 1989; a daughter, Karen Jane Mader; a son, Ronald Mader; brothers Emory Galloway, Charles Galloway and Winford Reed; and sisters Edith VanDeMark, Mildred Galloway and Daisy Galloway.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, 2009, at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, Pa. Interment will follow in the Camptown Cemetery, Camptown, Pa. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be directed to Guthrie Hospice, Guthrie Square, Sayre, PA 18840, in Emma J. Whitney's memory.
