Birth: Dec. 23, 1657
Haverhill
Essex County
Massachusetts, USA
Death: 1736

Captured by the Indians in March 15, 1697. The captives were being taken to Canada where they were told they would have to strip and then be scourged, and run the gantlet. Realizing they would eventually be killed Hannah along with a boy attacked the sleeping Indians with hatchets, killing one and Hannah killed nine. One wounded squaw survived and one Indian child managed to escape. She, the boy and the remaining captives started downstream in an Indian canoe, but Hannah turned around thinking she would not be believed. She went back to the camp and scalped the dead Indians for evidence. Her party reached Haverhill safely and presented the scalps to the General Court in Boston, which voted a bounty of twenty five pounds to Hannah and twelve pounds ten shillings each to her two companions. After Hannah's death two monuments were erected in her memory, one in Haverhill, dedicated November 25, 1879 and the other at the scene of her exploit June 17, 1874. She does not have a headstone or marker at her gravesite.

I am proud to be a descendant of Hannah's. Hopefully, a teensy drop of her strong blood runs with mine.
