Anthony Weakland, 16, passed away suddenly on July 17, 2012. He was born in Akron on March 16, 1996.
He was a student at Springfield High School. He loved Jimi Hendrix, Lil Wayne, riding his dirt bike and spending time with his friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather and best buddy, Robert (Bob) Evans.
Anthony is survived by his parents, Mark and Julie; siblings, Marky (Julie), Ally (Brad) and Amy; grandparents, Jean (Bob) Evans, Leo and Pat Weakland; niece, LilyJean; nephews, Layne and Chase; aunts and uncles, Linda (Dave) Edgington, Robin (Craig) Walters, Dawn "Judy" Long, Laura Weakland, Leo (Aliki) Weakland, John (Jenny) Weakland, Kris (Dennis) Harris; and many cousins and friends, especially Jesse Hiner and the "Goof Troop".
Anthony Weakland was killed when he was struck by a car that fled the scene. The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office said that Anthony Weakland, of Springfield Township, was walking on Albrecht Avenue going to his sister's house down the street when he was hit. Weakland was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:53 p.m.
Grief counselors met with people Wednesday afternoon at the Springfield Church of the Brethren to help them cope.
Later on Wednesday, hundreds went to the crash site to remember Weakland. There were so many people at the vigil, police were forced to block off that section of the road.
Police have recovered a few items from the vehicle in question and they're following up on leads. Now, investigators are asking for the community's help to find the hit-and-run driver who killed him.
NOTE: A 46-year-old Mogadore, Ohio, woman was charged Thursday, July 26, 2012, with tampering with evidence and felony hit-skip for the crash that killed 16-year-old Anthony Weakland.
UPDATE: In 2013, the woman responsible for this tragic death pled guilty and was sentenced to 4 years in prison.
