NOTE: The Missouri Death Certificate 26724 for Emma Wightman gives her place of burial as Benton Green Cemetery in St. Clair County. However, her tombstone is located in Pleasant Springs Cemetery.

Emma Leona (Payton) (Dains) Wightman was the daughter of Thomas Payton (1814-1900) and his 3rd wife Martha Ellen (Stivers) Payton (1835-1940) of Adair County, Missouri.

Emma had the following known full-siblings:

John Payton 1864-1917
Ransford Payton 1868-1952
Cornelius Payton 1871-1940
Charles Payton 1874-1959
George W. Payton 1876-
Ruth Payton 1878-
Christina Payton 1882-1927
Enick Payton 1882-
Albert Payton 1884-1957
Rose Ellen Payton 1889-1955

Emma had the following known half-siblings from her mother's first marriage to Milton Hickman:

Janetta "Nettie" Hickman 1860-
Sarah M. Hickman 1863-

Emma had the following known half-siblings from her father's first marriage to Frances Crosley (1819-1857):

Mary P. Payton 1841-
America A. Payton 1843-
Mary Payton 1843-
James W. Payton 1845-

Note: I realize there are two daughters listed above named Mary, but this is according to the 1850 census of Macon County, Missouri, which lists a Mary P. Payton age 9 and a Mary Payton age 7 in the household of parents Thomas and Frances Payton. Since this census does not list relationships, one of these Marys could have been a relative rather than a daughter.

Emma had the following half-siblings from her father's second marriage to Marie Nancy McMenony (1835- ):

Ambrosian "Ambrose" Payton 1858-1938
Thomas Jefferson Payton 1860-1951

Emma is listed in the 1880 census of Nineveh Township of Adair County, Missouri. At that time, Her father Thomas was 64, her mother Martha 40, and there were 7 children living in the home: John 15, Emma 13, Ransford 11, Cornelius 9, Charles 6, George 4, and Ruth 2.

Emma married James Lane Dains in 1886. They had the following known children:

Seth Buriel "Burt" Dains 1888-1964
Joseph M. Dains 1890-1900
Olloi "Ollie" Dains 1892-1900
Oliver Britain "Brit" Dains 1894-1956
Maudie "Modie" Dains 1896-1900
Mary Frances Dains 1901-1954
Pansy Leona Dains 1903-1968
James Everet Dains 1906-1954
Daisy Alice Dains 1907-1970

Great tragedy struck this family on August 17, 1900 when 3 of the Dains children, Joseph age 10, Ollie age 7, and Modie age 3, drowned in the Weaubleau Creek in St. Clair County, Missouri, while their mother was doing laundry. All three are buried in Macedonia Cemetery in Vista, St. Clair County. At the time of this accident, the Dains had 5 children. The oldest, Burt, and the third child Brit were the only ones out of 5 children left after this accident. They had 4 more children after the accident.

This family is listed in the 1910 census of St. Clair County, Missouri: James 46, farmer, Emma 44, and children Bert 21, Brit 15, Mary 8, Pansy 6, James 4, and Alice 2.

James died in 1926 and was buried at Benton Green Cemetery.

Emma remarried to Charles Wightman (1874-1956). He is buried at Pleasant Springs Cemetery in St. Clair County, Missouri.
