Charles Harvey Crossley, 88, passed away at his home in Greensboro, NC on June 25, 2011.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 30, 2011 at the sanctuary of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Greensboro. His ashes will be placed in the columbarium at the Salisbury National Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Nesbitt Crossley, and three daughters; Alexis Tjoa and her husband Hock, of Penn Valley, California;
Lisa Crossley of Greensboro; and Marta Beckett, and her husband Richard, of Waconia, Minnesota. He also leaves his three granddaughters, Sarah and Elizabeth Tjoa and Emma Beckett.

Born in Philadelphia, Penna., Harvey was a brave patriot who enlisted in the US Army to serve in World War II; he spent the next 20 years in service to his country, retiring as an Army Major in 1966. He earned two Purple Hearts during engagements in Korea in 1950. His post-military career was spent as a Certified Flight Instructor, where Harvey was able to combine his passion for aviation with his vocation. He was a respected and disciplined pilot, with a great spirit of adventurism, receiving his license for ultra-light aircraft at the age of 78. His family thought him crazy for wanting to fly in what they considered a "lawn chair with an engine", but Harvey loved the freedom of the skies. He trained hundreds of pilots in the Atlanta area for nearly three decades, and also spent seven years in Saudi Arabia schooling future commercial pilots. Harvey and Joan were happy wanderers, living in and traveling through many locations overseas, as well as in the US.

Harvey was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Grass Valley, California; and a 33rd Degree Freemason.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 3800 Shamrock Dr., Charlotte, NC 28215-3220.

A reception will be held in the church library following the service.
