Daughter of Elijah William and Mary Catherine (Cave) Pettit, who were married in about 1847 in Page County, Virginia. Her father was a cooper and her mother was a homemaker and Mary Frances was the 3rd of 11 children born to the couple.

Mrs. Mary Pettit Alger Dead

MRS. MARY PETTIT ALGER, aged 85 years and 22 days, died at six o'clock Monday morning at the home of her daughter. She was the wife of Leroy E. Alger, who died 24 years ago. She is survived by the following children: Mrs. Mary Miesner, of West Newton, Pa.; John Alger, Martinsburg, W.Va.; Mrs. Ada Shaner, and Mrs. J.E. Comer, of West Newton, Pa.; Thomas Alger, of Donora, Pa.; Mrs. Lydia M. Michael, of Ellwood city, Pa.; Mrs. Rachel Skelton, of Connellsville, Pa.; Mrs. Lucy McIntyre, of West Newton and 53 grandchildren.

** Elias was a farmer and former civil war confederate soldier.

** According to Mary Frances' 1900 census, the couple parented a total of 15 children, of which only 9 had survived up to that point. They were all raised in Page County, Virginia.

** Mary's sister, Reffina Catherine Pettit, married Elias' brother, William Harden Alger, on 5 Sep 1866 in Page County, VA.
