Born in NYC on Feb. 22, 1895, the daughter of architect Henri Fouchaux and painter Mary Emma Orr. Madeleine settled in Pasadena in 1910 and was educated at Pasadena High School, USC College of Fine Arts under Guy Rose and William L. Judson, and Occidental College. She married artist Sigurd Russell in 1920 and continued her art career. She then studied at Otis Art Institute in 1923. She divorced Sigurd Russell in 1927. In 1933, her studio burned.
Madeleine's father was Mr. Henri Fouchaux. He was born at Coytesville, NJ, April 29, 1856. His parents were Julien Fouchaux, who emigrated from France in 1847, and Madeleine Rapinez, who came from France in 1848. They were married in NYC in 1849.
He attended the public school at Coytesville until he was about seventeen, when he apprenticed himself to a carpenter and learned that trade. His first work in NYC was a five-story dwelling for Mr. N.A. Cowdry, at 25th St. near Madison Avenue. About that time, he attended the night school at Cooper Union, and took a course in architecture, under the late Professor Plympton, and his diploma, signed by Peter Cooper, was always one of his most cherished possessions.
Mr. Fouchaux died July 8, 1910, and according to his obituary in the American Institute of Architects, he was buried at Coytesville, NJ.
Madeleine's mother, Mary Emma Orr, was born in Whalley, England on June 28, 1860. Mary arrived in the U.S. in 1865. For ten years she studied art in NYC and worked there as a portraitist. She wed architect Henri Fouchaux in 1894. After his death, she moved to Los Angeles in 1910 with her daughter Madeleine. She died there on Nov. 23, 1942. Her rare works include portraits and landscapes.

Shortly after his birth, Sigurd's parents separated and he was taken to Paris where he grew up and was educated at Sorbonne University. In 1910, he taught languages at the University of Hawaii. By 1911 he had opened an art gallery in Los Angeles. Disabled during WWI, he returned to Los Angeles, opened the Potboiler Art Center in 1922, and taught at Los Angeles High School. A writer, lecturer, actor, and world traveler, Russell died in Los Angeles on Aug. 4, 1946.
