Train-Truck Accident Kills Minden Youth
Sherrill L. Whitten, a Minden young man, was killed shortly before noon Friday in a railway crossing crash on a county road just south of Fairbury. Whitten, driving a truck loaded with fertilizer, was employed at a farm near Fairbury. The train was a Union Pacific freight loaded with automobiles.
Jefferson County Attorney Robert Lammers said Whitten was thrown out by the impact and crushed beneath the truck.
Whitten, 19, was born in Holdrege, but had lived most of his life in the Minden community. He was graduated from high school at Minden two years ago where he lettered in football and basketball.
Survivors are his father, Neal and one sister, Lynn Ann, who is living at home.
Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the First Christian Church in Minden and burial was in the Minden Cemetery.
Neal Whitten, father of the youth, was reared in Alma and is a brother of Waldo Whitten of this city, while his mother, Mrs. Ada Whitten lives in Orleans.
