OBITUARY: Joseph W. Gay, Vet of Indian War Is Dead at Age of 88 - Joseph W. Gay, veteran of the Indian wars of 1854 and last survivor of the Steptoe Butte company near The Dalles, died at Siletz, February 7th at the age of 88 years. He was born in Yamhill County, December 22, 1842. His father was George Gay, who voted at the famous Champoeg convention in 1843. Joseph Gay volunteered and served six years in the Indian wars.
He is survived by two sons, D.W. Gay of Portland and Charles Gay of Washington state, a daughter, Mrs. J.L. Goodell of Siletz, a sister, Mrs. Ada Dent of Hopewell and a brother, William who lives in Washington.
Funeral services were held at Siletz. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery.
