US Congressman. Born and raised in Maysville, Kentucky he was appointed to the bar after graduating from Augusta College in 1841. He served in the state senate from 1853 to 1856. A staunch Unionist he twice ran for and won a seat in Congress serving from 1861 to 1865. In addition to serving in Congress during the Civil War he also served as a colonel for Union forces seeing action at the Battle of Ivy Mountain. In 1869 he was appointed by President U.S. Grant a Commissioner to Mexico. He returned to Congress when he his fellow Kentuckians elected him to serve in the Forty-ninth Congress from 1885 to 1887. He did not seek reelection and returned to his law practice in Maysville where he remained active in community affairs until his death. (bio by: Bigwoo)
