In his original application for a confederate pension . . . filed in October of 1923 . . . J M Sledge stated that he was born in Coosa Co., Alabama . . . and that he enlisted in Co. K 22nd Inf. in Alabama in March 1862 . . . a report from the Adjutant General shows that J M Sledge was paroled at Montgomery, Ala. May 26, 1865, as a prt. Co. K, 22nd. Ala. Inf. . . . according to his widow's 1925 "Application for Mortuary Warrant" J M Sledge died in his home on the 21st day of June, 1925 . . . in the town of Jones Prairie, County of Milam, Texas . . . the "Certificate of Physician" states that the patient died of "traumatism caused from a fall which broke his hip" . . .
