Jay E. Sackett Services Held On Monday (March 10) At Roseville

"Funeral services were held Monday at Roseville for Jay E. Sackett, 63, a railroad freight conductor and a native of El Dorado County. Mr. Sackett, a cousin of Edward Christian, Mrs. Eva Fowler and the late William Christian, was a native of El Dorado County. He passed away Thursday night of last week (Mar 6) while standing beside his train at Norden. Sackett left Roseville en route to Sparks, (Washoe) Nev., about 4:30 p.m. Thursday. The train stopped at Norden for a helper engine to be detached and for the crew to eat. He had left the caboose and crewman saw his lantern fall to the ground. When they reached him he was dead. The body was taken to Truckee. Nevada County Coroner Alvah Hooper, who investigated, has not disclosed the cause of his death. The railroadman was a native of El Dorado. He began his railroad career in 1905 as a brakeman. He was advanced to the post of conductor in 1913. He had resided here (Roseville) since 1908. His home was at 212 Elefa Street, Roseville, and he was a member of the Sacramento Elks Lodge, The Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and The Brotherhood of Railroad Conductors.
Surviving are his mother and daughter, Mrs. Clara S. Sackett and Mrs. Fay Tapp, both of Roseville and his brother George H. Sackett of Oakland. Burial was in the Odd Fellows Cemetery at Roseville."
