Bertha King was daughter of Hannah Tapfield and Thomas King. She immigrated to the United States in 1850's and traveled west with the Mormon migration. Her family settled in Salt Lake City, Utah. She married Brigham Young Hampton, son of Julia Foster and Jonathan Hampton. They were divorced after having several children. She and David Kearney met while working on the transcontinental railroad in Nevada. They were married the day after the Golden Spike ceremony in Utah. He continued to work for the railroad and they moved from place to place in Utah, Nevada, and California. They had three children: Frank Francis Kearney b. 15 Oct 1874 in Ogden, UT; Thomas Kearney b. March, 1870 and Bertha Mary Kearney b. 13 Sept 1872 in Ogden, UT. She died in 1912.
