Funston, William Lewis
William L. Funston closed his eyes to all things earthly on last Saturday morning and after months of great suffering is at rest, and while we all mourn the loss of a good citizen, none can but have a feeling of thankfulness that he is free from pain as it was generally conceded that he could never recover.

William Lewis Funston was born at Ossian Iowa, August 28, 1865 being at the time of death in his 37th year. In the spring of 1869 his parents became residents of this city and all the old residents have known him since childhood and very many kindly tributes have been paid to his manly uprightness and to his kindliness of heart.

In 1886 he was united in marriage to Miss Carrie Ploof and two daughters have blessed their union, Ruth and Margaret. The funeral services were held at the M. E. Church conducted by Pastor Rev. Dr. E. D. Black assisted by Rev. Hess of the Christian church. Three of his brothers of Granite Rock Lodge No. 200 I.O.O.F. and three of his Neighbors of Roman Camp No. 284 Modern Woodmen of American tenderly bore him to his last resting place in Park Cemetery. Those who knew him best are saying to one another ' a good man has left us' and those who were with him in his last hours feel that 'all things were well with him.'

It was one of the largest week day funerals ever held here and a large number of his brothers of Granite Rock I.O.O.F. and Roman Camp M. W. A. and a large delegation of the Daughters of Rebecca were in attendance upon the funeral and at the cemetery the impressive burial service of both the Odd ellows and Woodmen was given and the Daughters of Rebecca were prepared to hold their burial service but owing to the lateness of the hour it was omitted.
