He was called "Chuck" by many, and "Pug" by family and close friends. He was a wonderfully good-hearted man. He was big, and often looked gruff, but he was not gruff. He was a teddy bear, with a loving spirit.

Pug was a school teacher for all his career, mostly at Benson High School in Omaha.

He was one of the best grandpas one could have...and this is being written by the other grandpa of some of his grandchildren.

Pug is buried by his baby son Robert James Davey (#18175358).

Pug's father was Clarence LeRoy "Boy" Davey (born 1908 in Omaha, NE; died 1988 in Omaha). His mother was Kathryn Ann "Kay" Wilkinson Davey (born 1911 in Shelton, NE; died 1996 in Omaha). Pug was the oldest of six children: Pug, Phillip Clarence Davey, Walter Bernard "Buzzy" Davey, Sally Kay Davey Mitchell, Susan LeAnn "Sue" Davey Buckman, and Matthew Timothy "Tim" Davey.

Pug and his wife (Carol Lenore Piper) had five children: Steven Charles "Steve" Davey, Scott Lee Davey, Sandra Leigh "Sandi" Davey Cook, Robert James Davey (who lived only two days), and Kurt Allan Davey.

In honor of teacher, friends urged to wear shorts.

Once Chuck Davey retired from a 35-year teaching career, he wore shorts year round.

In winter he would snow blow his driveway while wearing boots, a parka and shorts, said his wife, Carol, of Omaha.

“When he stopped teaching, he never wanted to wear teaching clothes again,” she said.

Charles Steven Davey, 79, will be clad in shorts and a Mickey Mouse T-shirt when he is buried today, his wife said. He died Monday at Methodist Hospital of cancer.

The family urges those who attend his 9 a.m. burial at Fort Calhoun Cemetery and 11 a.m. memorial service at St. Andrew United Methodist Church, 15050 West Maple Road to wear shorts.

Davey was a member of 20-plus years of Underwood Hills Presbyterian Church, but the family moved his service to a larger church to accommodate the expected crowd.

Omaha Benson High School played a major role in Davey’s life.

He graduated from Benson in 1951; taught American government, psychology and sociology there from 1960 until 1995; and was inducted into the school’s hall of fame in 2011.

In retirement he was a docent at the Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium. He also exercised daily at the Maple Street YMCA, where he was a 180 Club member. The club is for people who exercise there at least 180 days in a year. When he told Y staff that he wouldn’t make his 180 this year, other 180 Club members donated the days he was short.

“We just cannot believe how kind people have been,” Carol Davey said.

Chuck Davey received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Omaha. He served in the Air Force from 1953 to 1957, where he developed a love of airplanes, his wife said.

Son, Robert, preceded his father in death.

Survivors, besides his wife of 58 years, include children Steve Davey of Hinsdale, Ill.; Scott Davey of Modale, Iowa; and Sandi Cook and Kurt Davey, both of Omaha; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
