| Birth: | Dec. 3, 1883 | | Death: | Sep. 15, 1945 | Austrian composer, born in Vienna. A student of Arnold Schönberg, who developed the concept of 12-tone serialism. Webern's compositions were never much appreciated in his lifetime, and he was forced to earn his living by private lessons, conducting and arranging. His modern approach to music was branded "cultural Bolshevism" and "degenerate art" by the Nazis, and they banned performances of his works and those of his colleagues of the "New Vienna" school. When the war ended, Webern looked forward to the possibility of composing again, but he was shot and killed by an American soldier as he was standing, smoking a cigarette on the porch of his home in Mittersill, near Salzburg. The story goes that the soldier was involved in the black market, and he thought Webern was an MP spying on him. All told, Webern left only about three hours' worth of compositions, but he is considered one of the seminal figures of 20th-century music. (bio by: Paul F. Wilson)
