Captain William DeLong

The death of Captain William DeLong, St Martins occurred in the General Hospital, Saint John, on Thursday 4 July at the age of 81 years.

A son of the late David and Martha DeLong, he was born in St Martins and followed the sea all his life. He was of Loyalist decent.

He was associated at one time with his father and uncles in building a number of ships known as the Delong fleet.
Captain DeLong sailed the seven seas in these ships and it is said that his knowledge of building and sailing of ships was extensive.

His life was full of exciting adventures and he was a raconteur of ability.

Long ago when the brig "Reaper" in command of his uncle the late Captain Jacob DeLong, was wrecked on the north shore of Ireland, Captain DeLong was one of the crew who returned by steamer. He is probably the last of the St Martin's old time mariners. He will be greatly, missed in the community and his death has caused widespread regret. When Captain Delong retired from the sea, he went to live at New London, Conn, and was employed in the shipyards there.

Returning to Canada he took up farming and spent several years in the agricultural pursuits in Nova Scotia before returning to his native St Martins, to reside a few years ago. He is survived by his wife. One brother Simon DeLong- New London, Conn. and one sister Mrs Starr Sumner, Everett, Mass.

Several cousins reside in St Martins.

He was a member of the Orange Lodge for over sixty years.
