Born Nikola Zammit in the area known as "Tal-Belliegħa" in Rabat, Gozo, on December 22, 1788, to Valerio and Maria Zammit, Nikola joined the Order of the Franciscan Friars Minor Capuchins as a lay brother on March 3, 1814, receiving his habit and the religions name of Fra Crispino da Gozo.

Upon taking his solemn vows, Fra Krispin was assigned to the Capuchin Friary of Santa Liberata of Kalkara, Malta, as a questuant. Receiving the obedience to join the Fraternity of Floriana, Zammit led a remarkably humble spirit. His exemplary life led many to seek his advice. A lifelong questuant, Fra Krispin died in odour of sanctity at the convent of Floriana on March 11, 1867, aged 79.

His mummified body that is still preserved and venerated in the Capuchin crypt of Floriana. It has withstood the test of time and after the damage sustained during the Second World War when the Capuchin church, convent and crypt were almost totally destroyed during an air raid in April 1942, was placed in a glass case for visitors to see through the initiative of the late late Friar Francis Azzopardi OFM. Cap., who had the crypt restored in the 1970's.
