Leona Mae "Lee" Dahl, 60, died Tuesday, July 12, 1988, at Rice Memorial Hospital, Willmar, of a cerebral hemorrhage. Lee and her husband Fred founded The Dahl House, Inc., women's clothing stores in 1967 in Northfield as a means of providing a college education for their sons. At the time, Lee Dahl was the only full-time employee. She had been president of the chain that now includes 22 stores in three states with more than 400 employees. Her keen fashion sense and warmth in dealing with people were key elements in the success of The Dahl House. Lee Dahl was born on July 18, 1927, the identical twin daughter of dairy farmers Edwin and Esther Stratmoen of Dawson, Minn. She and her twin sister Mae were extremely close and shared a special love. Lee graduated from Dawson High School in 1945, and from The Minnesota School of Business in 1947. She met her husband Fred Dahl in 1948. Lee and Fred were not only husband and wife, but best of friends and partners in life. Fred and Lee have four sons, Rick and Jeff, both of Northfield, are executives with The Dahl House. Gregory, Coon Rapids, is an attorney and state senator representing part of Anoka County, Gary, Minneapolis, is a healthcare professional working at Abbott Northwestern Hospital. She is also survived by parents Edwin and Esther Stratmoen; twin sister, Mae Matthews, South St. Paul and sisters, Angie Oman, Dawson and Carol Holt, Knoxville, Tenn.; two brothers, Noel, Northfield and Roger, Dawson; daughters-in law Pam, Ruth and Neath; and grandchildren Chris, Nancy, Jane, Jennifer, Tom and John. Her unique personality was summed up by her husband's brother John, who said, "After God made Lee Dahl, He threw away the mold." Visitation was Thursday, July 14, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at The Benson Funeral Home, Northfield. The funeral service was Friday, July 15, at 1 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, Northfield, with the Rev. Leslie G. Svendsen officiating. Music was provided by Ruth Ferguson, organist, and Don McRae, soloist. Pallbearers were Scott Dahl, Rick Clark, Kent and Scott Matthews, and Todd and Shane Stratmoen. Interment was at Oaklawn Cemetery, Northfield. Memorials are preferred to be sent to the Lee Dahl Memorial Fund at St. John's Lutheran Church, Northfield.
