Steven W. Abing, age 64, of Rock Falls died Monday July 9, 2012 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire surrounded by his family.

Steve was born February 10, 1948 in Lancaster, but grew up mostly in the Platteville area. He was the son of Francis and Mary (Margan) Abing. Steve graduated from Platteville High School in 1966 and went onto college at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, graduating with a Civil Engineering Degree in 1971. Steve married Sue Weber on August 29, 1970 in Burlington, WI. After marriage they moved to Eau Claire where Steve began his career working with the State of Wisconsin, Dept. of Transportation as a Civil Engineer serving as a project engineer and later as a supervisor. In 1977, they moved to their hobby farm in Rock Falls where he raised cattle, pigs, chickens and cats. Steve retired after 30+ years of working for the State of Wisconsin.

Steve was an avid Packer Fan and St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan. He enjoyed reading, deer hunting, playing cribbage, doing Sudoku puzzles, traveling and walking his beloved golden retrievers, Maggie and Sammie.

Steve is survived by his wife, Sue; his father, Francis Abing of Platteville; five brothers, Terry of Platteville; Greg (Carolyn) of Lancaster; Dan (Nita) of Grandview, MO; Tim (Kathi) of Wheat Ridge, CO; Kevin (Laura) of Milwaukee; five sisters, Ann Weaver of DeForest; Rita (Mike) Nell of Pewaukee; Susan Abing of Sun Prairie; Eileen (Mark) Frank of Dodgeville; Carol Abing of Milwaukee; brothers and sisters-in-law, David (Ann) Weber of Sun City Center, FL; Mary (Chilito) Rodriguez of Schiller Park, IL; Patricia (Phil Galletto) Weber of Ridgeway; Kathy (John Epple) Rider of Germantown; Steve (Terri) Weber of Janesville; several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Steve is preceded in death by his mother, Mary in 2000; his father and mother-in-law, Elmer "Butch" and June Weber; and brother-in-law, Patrick Rider.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to St. Francis Food Pantry 1221 Truax Blvd. Eau Claire, WI 54701 or Our Lady of Fatima School in India; in care of St. Joseph Catholic Church, 417 West Menomonie St., Elk Mound, WI 54739.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday July 14, 2012 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rock Falls where the Rev. Joe, Joseph Nakwah will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday at the Rhiel Funeral Home in Durand and one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

Rhiel Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Durand, is serving the family.
