Nello Donini, 89, of Rochester, died Thursday, Oct. 15, 2009, at the Hyder Family Hospice House in Dover.
Born in Portsmouth, June 6, 1920, he was the son of Biagio and Candina (Casadei) Donini. He attended Portsmouth Schools, graduating with the class of 1938.
He went to work at the PNSY in 1940 in Shop 56, leaving to enlist in the Army Air Corps. He served his country as a parachute rigger in the 38th Service Squadron stationed in the South Pacific from 1942 to 1945.
Upon his discharge, he returned to work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a mechanic in Shop 07, retiring in 1978.
He worked as a maintenance repairman for Lilac City Estates in Rochester from 1979 until 1984.
He enjoyed smelt fishing and oystering on Great Bay, as well as clamming and deep sea fishing. He was an avid cribbage player.
He was predeceased by brothers, Tancredi (Mike) and Leno (Ike), and sisters, Elsa, Enis, Pia, Olympia, and Julia.
He is survived by of his wife of 59 years, Ellen (Cragin); his daughter, Patricia and her husband, John Mehan of Strafford; daughter, Elaine and husband, Stephen Hersey of Hampton; granddaughters, Jody Rafferty and Michelle Mehan; great-grandsons, Jacob and Caleb, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held from 12-2pm followed by a funeral service at 2pm on Mon, Oct. 19, at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. Friends invited. Flowers will be accepted.
