He entered the service at Fall River, Bristol County, Massachusetts and served as a Private in the Union Army in Company A, 2nd Massachusetts Cavalry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on September 24, 1864 at Luray, Virginia. He was issued the CMOH on October 14, 1864. His citation reads "Capture of flag."
