XV (Reserve) Squadron
Royal Air Force
Two RAF Tornado GR4 fighter jets crashed mid-air over the Moray Firth, south of Wick, Scotland while on a routine training flight. Flt Lt Hywel Poole was killed and Sqn Ldr Samuel Bailey and Flt Lt Adam Sanders are still missing and presumed dead. A fourth crew member was rescued from the sea and was in serious but stable condition. The airmen were based at RAF Lossiemouth. On July 18, 2012 it was announced that the bodies of the two missing airmen had been recovered and formally identified.
Sqn Ldr Bailey, 36, was originally from Nottingham. In 1998 he completed a B Eng (Hons) degree in aeronautical engineering at the University of Hertfordshire. After completing navigator training, he joined the Tornado Force in 2001 with XIII Squadron and served on operations over Iraq. He had been an instructor with XV (Reserve) Squadron since 2004 and was promoted to squadron leader in 2010 after a tour of duty in Afghanistan. His commanding officer considered him as one of his most trusted instructors and flight commanders. Sqn Ldr Bailey leaves behind his wife, Fiona, and a daughter, Erin. Flt Lt Fiona Bailey is a qualified RAF search and rescue helicopter pilot currently operating as a controller at the Aeronautical Rescue Co-ordination Centre at RAF Kinloss.
Prince Andrew, The Duke of York, honorary air commodore for RAF Lossiemouth, led a memorial service for the airmen on July 12, 2012 at the station.
Funeral with full military honours was held on August 21, 2012 at St Gerardine's Church, Lossiemouth.
