George served with Co. H, Ninth Regiment, Ohio Infantry Volunteers during the Civil War. He was injured in Lebanon, Kentucky, in March 1862, while helping to move a supply wagon. He received a medical discharge in May 1862. George, who was a carpenter before the War, was no longer able to work as a laborer after his injuries.

George married Catharina (Kate) Gößwein on 14 February 1864, in Cincinnati. They had six children: George (1864-1875), Andrew (1864-1943), Elisabeth (1868-1868), Anna (1870-1953), Emma (1873-1963), and Lena (1875-1952).
