Helen E. Roseler

Mrs. Helen Elizabeth McKean Roseler, 97, passed from this life Tuesday, July 10, 2012, at LaVerna Village in Savannah, Mo., surrounded by her family.

A native and lifelong St. Joseph resident, Mrs. Roseler was born on July 24, 1914, to Robert Lindsey McKean and Jessie De La Barre McKean.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Roseler was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Theodore Roseler, who died in action March 3, 1945, in Iwo Jima, during World War II and her twin sister, Dorothy McKean Ratcliff, who died in 1970.

Mrs. Roseler graduated from Central High School in 1933 and later attended Gard's Business School.

In their youth, the McKean twins gave many dance performances throughout the area.

And before her marriage, Mrs. Roseler often assisted her sister at the McKean School of Dance studio, which was located in downtown St. Joseph.

From 1955 to 1976, Mrs. Roseler was Executive Secretary for Selective Service Board No. 11, in Buchanan County.

She was responsible for 13 counties before her 21 year tenure ended and Selective Service was phased out in 1976.

Many of the young men of the era carried draft cards with her signature on them.

Mrs. Roseler was a longtime member of the Soroptimist International Club, having served three terms as president of the local chapter.

In 2005, she was honored as a 50 year member of the service organization.

She was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Cathedral Catholic Church and a volunteer over the years in many of its ministries.

She belonged to the Daughters of Isabella and was a member of St. Anne's Altar Society and the Ladies of Charity.

Survivors include one son, Robert Arthur Roseler and Karen, of LaGrange, Ill.; one daughter, Carol Roseler Pyle of Leawood, Kan.; a granddaughter, Lisa Morriss Sherry and Daniel Sherry of Leawood, Kan.; a grandson, Lawrence D. Morriss, Jr. and Jane Morriss of Leawood; six great-grandchildren, Jason Daniel Sherry, Samuel Lawrence Sherry, Jennifer Jeanne Sherry, Megan Elizabeth Morriss, Andrew Lawrence Morriss and Katherine Anne Morriss.
