George Skorich, 86, former Calumet resident, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, in the Itasca Nursing Home, Grand Rapids.
Born May 6, 1914, in Taconite, he was the son of Mike and Boja (Koruga) Skorich. A 1933 graduate of Greenway High School, he grew up in Taconite and White City. Following World War II, he lived most of his life in Calumet. He had worked in mines in Arizona and Greenland and following World War II worked for J.&L. Mining Co., retiring in 1971.
George and Linda Riikkola were married Nov. 6, 1960, in Chisholm, He was a former member of St. Basil's Serbian Orthodox Church of Chisholm, had served on the Calumet City Council and was a member of the Marinoff-Miskovich VFW Post 8831 of Pengilly.
During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army in the European and Pacific Theaters.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mike and Boja Skorich; sisters, Mary Mandich and Angeline Wohlsdorf; brothers Joe, John, Milan, and Rody Skorich.
Survivors include his wife, Linda; a son, David (Delores) Koivisto of Coleraine; daughters, Karen (Philip) Sigfrinius and Mary (Daniel) Strand, both of Calumet; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marie (Bill) Carmichael of Upland. Pa.
Visitation: 1:30 until the2:30 p.m. service Saturday in Peterson Funeral Chapel, Coleraine, the Very Rev. Bogdan Zjalic officiating. Interment in Lakeview Cemetery.
