OBITUARY from the Jefferson County Tribune
Mrs. Mary J. F. Day passed from this life on Saturday noon, July 27, 1918. She was born at Waynesville, Ohio, Feb. 9, 1836, therefore being at the time of her death, aged 82 years, 5 months, 17 days. She is the last of a large family of ten brothers and sisters, children of Isaac and Mary Fairholm. On December 9, 1859, she was united in marriage to Mr. John W. Day, and from this union two children were born, who died in infancy. Mr. and Mrs. day came to Kansas in the year of their marriage, 1859, and settled in Oskaloosa.
After a residence here of a number of years, Mr. and Mrs. Day moved to Topeka and became members of the First Presbyterian church at Topeka in which her husband was a member of the session until the time of his death in 1905. Subsequently they moved to California and lived for a time in Oakland, when they returned to Oskaloosa, owing to Mr. Day's failing health, in 1902.
When the Presbyterian church of Oskaloosa was organized, March 17, 1867, Mr. and Mrs. Day became charter members, thus at the time of her death she was the oldest and only charter member left of that original organization.
Tho a member of a large family only a few intimate relatives are left today to mourn her death--a nephew, Mr. F. H. Roberts, and nieces, Mrs. Julia Lane, Mrs. Mary Roberts, Mrs. W. L. Monroe and Miss Edith Stanley and with these a wider circle of grand nieces and nephews and friends.
Thus there passes from our midst one who seems to belong to a former generation. almost all of her life she was in delicate health and was cared for by a tender and thoughtful husband, until he was seized with invalidism, then she was able to arouse and care for him during the remaining years of his life. All of her long life she was a faithful and consistent member of the church, and faithful in all her attendance upon its services, so far as her strength would permit. A woman of a quiet, consistent character that exemplified the virtues of her Christian faith.
