Joseph was born in Creagerstown District, Frederick County, Maryland, on November 27, 1808, the son of John & Anna Maria Schrupp Freeze/Freese, who migrated to Coshocton County, Ohio, from Frederick County, Maryland. His grandparents were Michael and Catharina Nied, who settled in Frederick County, Maryland, from eastern Pennsylvania around the time of the American Revolution. Joseph married on January 27, 1835, to Anna Maria Weatherwax, in Coshocton County, Ohio. From the Coshocton Age of Saturday, November 14, 1885:

"MR. JOSEPH FREESE, of Bedford Township, this week had planted in the Public Square, Coshocton, a mountain ash tree as a memorial of himself and family. The tree from which the sprout was taken was brought from York State twenty-five years ago by Andrew Weatherwax. Other old settlers would do well to follow the example of Mr. Freese."

From the Democratic Standard of Friday Morning, March 3, 1893:

"Mrs. J. Weatherwax, of Coshocton, was called to the bedside of her father, Joseph Freese, of Mohawk Village, who is dangerously ill. ---Warsaw Clipper."
