Western Explorer. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1796, he owned his own trading vessel and worked along the Mississippi River. Next he established the St. Louis Missouri Fur Company in 1808 and made a far west expedition in 1809. He traveled to upper Missouri, established a post at the Three Forks in western Montana and was known as Nebraska's first white settler.
